This is a javelina (have-ah-lee-nah) mother and its young. Javelinas are black and gray with a lighter collar. The young are reddish to yellow-brown. The Javelina is a small but fierce desert animal that weighs 35 to 60 pounds, less than a large dog. Javelinas have poor eyesight but excellent hearing. They have a special gland that creates a strong smell, so people say you will smell them before you see them!
Javelinas' favorite food is prickly-pear cactus. The javelina is an herbivore (plant eater) and frugivore (fruit eater). They eat a wide variety of fruits, tubers, rhizomes, bulbs, acorns, grass, green shoots of annuals, stems of prickly pears, lupines, mesquite beans, and lechuguilla. The javelina is also known as the collared peccary, named for the white band, or collar, that runs across the shoulders. Contrary to popular myths, javelina are not members of the rodent family, nor are they actually members of the pig family (although many hunters commonly refer to them as pigs). People, mountain lions, bobcats and coyotes hunt javelin.
